Captaincy is a two-horse race, and the model backs the outsider
B.Fernandes projects 17.7 points captained against Haaland's 15.61 — a 2.09-point edge for the man three in four managers will not pick.
The armband math is unusually clean this week. B.Fernandes, away at promoted Hull, is the board's top projection at 8.85 expected points — 17.7 doubled — with a ceiling of 19.7, the average of his best 15% of our 50,000 simulations. Haaland, at home to Bournemouth, projects 7.8 expected points and 15.61 captained. The model's preference is 2.09 points of pure expectation.
Ownership turns that preference into a real decision. Haaland is owned by 75.2% of the game; B.Fernandes by 48.7%. Captaining Haaland is the insurance play — when he hauls, most of the field hauls with him. Captaining B.Fernandes is the expected-value play that also happens to be a mild differential. Both are defensible; only one is bigger.
Timing matters too: B.Fernandes kicks off Saturday lunchtime, Haaland not until Sunday — the armband decision locks a full day before the fallback plays.
Beyond the big two, Saka is the ceiling punt: 6.13 expected points but a ceiling of 18.87 — the widest realistic upside on the board — at home to newly promoted Coventry, with only 10.7% ownership. Thiago (11.78 captained) and Gabriel (10.63, with 1.78 expected points from clean-sheet scenarios alone) round out the credible list. Below that, you are punting for the sake of punting.
Bottom line: B.Fernandes 17.7 versus Haaland 15.61 — take the model's 2.09-point edge if you can stomach standing apart from 75.2% of the game.

How we get these numbers. Market odds (de-vigged) → Dixon-Coles scorelines → 50k Monte-Carlo simulations, scored on the official Fantasy Premier League points table. Ceiling = the average of a player's best 15% of our 50,000 simulations — the score when his best realistic games happen, not a fantasy cap.
